Elections Information for the R.M. of Rosedale No. 283

General elections for each office are held every four years. Rural municipalities hold an election for selected divisions every two years; however, each council member holds office for a four-year term. Upcoming municipal election dates are Wednesday, November 13, 2024 for odd-numbered Councillor Divisions 1, 3 & 5 , as well as the Reeve position.

September 9, 2024    Nominations open at 7:30 a.m.
October 9, 2024    Nominations close at 4:00 p.m.
October 10, 2024    Final date for withdrawal of candidates until 4:00 p.m.
November 5, 2024    Day of Advance Poll, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
November 13, 2024    Election Day, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
November 20, 2024    All election signs and posters are to be removed

RUNNING FOR MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

The Ministry of Government Relations has developed a new document to inform citizens of the requirements and process of running for Municipal Council. The elected council is the governing body of the municipality. Elected officials make decisions by passing resolutions or enacting bylaws. Bylaws are the laws of the municipality. Council establishes policies about what essential core services to provide, how those services will be delivered, and at what levels.

CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

1- is at least 18 years of age on the day of the election;

2- is not disqualified pursuant to this or any other Act;

3- is a Canadian citizen at the time the nomination paper is submitted;

4- has resided in Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which the nomination paper is submitted; and

5- is eligible to vote in the rural municipality.

VOTERS ELIGIBILITY

1- Be at least 18 years of age;

2- Be a Canadian Citizen;

3- Meet one of the following criteria:

(i) has resided in the rural municipality, or land now in the rural municipality, for at least three consecutive months immediately preceding the day of the election;

(ii) is the registered owner of property in the rural municipality, or property now situated in the municipality

(iii) is the assessed person with respect to property in the rural municipality, or property now situated in the municipality, pursuant to section 207 of The Municipalities Act;

(iv) is the occupant of a trailer or mobile home in the municipality, or land now situated in the municipality, that is the object of a permit required pursuant to section 306 of The Municipalities Act;

(v)  is the spouse of a person mentioned in subclause (iii) or (iv); or

(vi) is the chief executive officer of a duly incorporated co-operative, corporation or religious association that is assessed on the last revised assessment roll with respect to property in the rural municipality that is not exempt from taxation.

DETERMINING THE DIVISION

(More details in Section 39 of The Local Government Election Act, 2015) 

The division where a person is eligible to vote is determined by the first applicable clause:

  1. the division where the voter resides;
  2. the division where the voter owns assessed property; or
  3. the division where the voter holds a permit as the occupant of a trailer or mobile home.

Property in More Than One Division

i) If a voter owns assessed property in more than one division, but does not live in the municipality, he or she is eligible to vote at the polling place for the division in which his or her total assessment is the highest.

ii) If the total assessment is equal, the person will vote in the lowest numbered division.
